During liposuction, excess fat deposits are removed from various parts of the body, thus improving body proportions. It is in no way a method leading to significant weight reduction and elimination of obesity, it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, exercise and proper diet. It is also not a method to treat cellulite or loose sagging skin. The outer and inner surfaces of the thighs, hips and abdomen, and chin are most commonly treated. For a good result of liposuction, sufficient skin elasticity is necessary to prevent skin excesses after fat removal.
Liposuction can be performed alone or together with other plastic surgery procedures. Ideal candidates for liposuction are:
- Healthy individuals who do not have life-threatening diseases or medical conditions that may interfere with healing
- Fat pads confined to specific locations that cannot be lost through exercise
- Non-smokers
- Individuals with a positive attitude and a realistic expectation of outcome
Operative course
Smaller procedures can be performed under local anaesthesia and on an outpatient basis, while larger procedures are performed under general anaesthesia and short-term hospitalisation. First, we inject the desired areas with a local anaesthetic solution with a bleeding-controlling drug, then we make small incisions in the natural folds of the skin, insert long cannulas with a diameter of 2 mm to 5 mm into the subcutaneous tissue and suction the fat using a vacuum. In one procedure, we rarely exceed a volume of approximately 3,000 ml of suctioned tissue. After the operation, we immediately put on elastic underwear.
Postoperative course
After the procedure, it is necessary to wear special elastic underwear, which has a major impact on the overall outcome of the surgery. In 3 days after the surgery patients can take a shower, disinfect the wounds, the suctioned areas can be rubbed with creams for faster absorption of hematomas and swelling ( e.g. Heparoid, Liotom 100000). Elastic underwear must be worn for at least 4-8 weeks.
Stitches are removed approximately on the 7th-10th postoperative day, scar care, lubrication, pressure massage, protection from sunlight for at least 3-6 months is also necessary.
The average recovery time after this procedure is about 2-3 weeks. Greater physical exertion should be limited to about 1-2months.
Risks of liposuction
Transient mild swelling, bruising, or transient impaired sensation, and minor irregularities in skin contours often occur with liposuction, depending on the healing process. And despite the utmost caution, major complications may arise, these include:
- Severe bleeding, exceptionally requiring blood transfusion
- Seroma formation
- More permanent mild sensiry disturbances in the operated area
- Rarely, impaired blood supply with subsequent skin necrosis
