Ageing is manifested in the eye area by the excess and loosening of the eyelid skin and the bulging of fatty bags under the skin. These changes cause the appearance of cosmetically unfavourable skin overhangs and bulging of the fat pads in the upper and lower eyelids. They appear as puffy and tired eyelids and as 'bags under the eyes'.
Blepharoplasty is used to remove excess skin and muscle on the upper or lower eyelids and to remove excess fat bags. The goal of the surgery is to improve the appearance of the eyelids.
Before operation
A condition of eyelid surgery is good health, you must not take any medications that increase bleeding. I will explain the course of the operation and the postoperative period in detail during the consultation.
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis (our headquarters is in Brno), under local anaesthesia, immediately after the procedure you go home, it is necessary to arrange an escort.
The course of the operation
Upper eyelid surgery
The surgical incisions are guided along a very careful drawing on the skin. This is chosen so that the scars remain hidden beneath the natural skin folds of the upper eyelids. The area is then injected with a local anesthetic and the excess skin and some of the eyelid circular muscle is removed. Next, 2 fat bodies are excised and the excess fat is removed. The surgical incision is closed with fine sutures. The operation takes about 45 minutes.
Lower eyelid surgery
On the lower eyelids, an incision is made just below the eyelashes along the eyelid. The skin is gently peeled away from the muscle, allowing access to the area of the fat bodies to be reduced. The excess skin is then removed and the circular muscle of the lower eyelid is suspended. Finally, the wounds are closed with fine sutures. The operation takes about 1 hour.
Postoperative course
Swelling of the eyes and blood bruising are common for the first 2-3 days after surgery. It is advisable to sleep with your head propped up. At first, it is advisable to observe resting mode and apply cool compresses to the eye area, exclude all activities that increase blood pressure. Wounds can be painful, so be equipped with appropriate pain-relieving medication (e.g. Paralen, Ibalgin, etc.). Stitches are usually left in for 4-6 days, returning to normal activities after the first 1-2 weeks. The final result of the operation is usually visible after about 3 months, after the postoperative swelling has completely subsided and the scars have matured.
Risks of eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery is usually associated with, among other things, swelling of the eyelid tissues, blood bruising of the eyelids (hematoma), irritation of the conjunctivae or burning of the eyes, photophobia and tearing. In addition, complications such as infection, minor differences in the size and shape of the eyelids and eye slits due to skin irregularities, slight asymmetry, persistent traction of residual scars, ectropion (detachment of the lower eyelid or part of it) may occur; the postoperative outcome also depends on the individual patient's healing process.
